December is the most expensive month to fly to West Africa. Here is how UK families can plan ahead and still get a fair price.
For many British-Nigerian and British-Ghanaian families, Christmas means going home. It is also the most expensive time of the year to fly to West Africa, with demand peaking from mid-December to early January. A little planning can make a big difference to what you pay.
When to book
The best fares for Christmas usually appear well before the autumn. We suggest booking between May and August. By October, the cheaper fare classes on popular dates are often gone, and prices keep rising as December approaches.
Pick your dates carefully
Most families want to leave as soon as schools break up and return just before term starts. If you can fly a few days earlier, or return a few days later, you can avoid the very busiest flights. Midweek departures are generally cheaper than weekends.
Compare non-stop and one-stop options
Non-stop flights from London to Lagos, Abuja and Accra are quick and convenient, but they are also in highest demand. One-stop options via Istanbul, Casablanca, Addis Ababa, Brussels, Amsterdam, Doha or Dubai can be cheaper and often include two checked bags.
Think about baggage early
Gifts and supplies for family can add up. Check the baggage allowance for each fare before you book, and remember that extra bags bought at the airport are usually the most expensive option.
Consider alternative airports
If your family is in the north of Nigeria, compare Abuja with Lagos. For Ghana, travellers heading to Kumasi can connect domestically from Accra. Sometimes flying into one city and out of another is the best combination.
Check passports and visas now
Passport renewals can take longer in the run-up to Christmas. Make sure every traveller's passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date, and check the latest entry requirements for your destination.
