Fares change constantly, but the cheapest travellers follow the same habits. Here are the tips our agents use every day to bring the price down.
Airline prices move up and down all the time, driven by demand, competition and how many seats are left in each fare bucket. You cannot control the market, but you can control when, where and how you search. These are the habits our travel consultants use every day to find the lowest fares for customers flying from the UK.
1. Be flexible with your dates
Moving your departure by a day or two is the single most effective way to save money. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday departures are usually cheaper than Friday and Sunday flights, because fewer business and weekend travellers fly midweek. If your search allows it, compare a few dates either side of your ideal day.
2. Book at the right time
There is no magic booking day, but there are sensible windows. For short-haul Europe, two to three months ahead is usually enough. For long-haul routes such as Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, three to six months is a good target, and for Christmas, Easter or summer holiday travel you should start looking even earlier. Cheap seats on popular dates sell first.
3. Compare nearby airports
London has six major airports, and regional airports such as Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow often have their own long-haul routes. Searching for a city code like "LON" shows every London airport at once. On the arrival side, compare nearby cities too: Abuja versus Lagos, Fort Lauderdale versus Miami, or Baltimore versus Washington.
4. Consider one-stop flights
Non-stop flights are convenient, but connecting through hubs such as Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, Addis Ababa or Amsterdam can be dramatically cheaper. Gulf and African carriers in particular often include two checked bags, which matters if you are visiting family.
5. Look at the total price, not the headline fare
A cheap fare that charges for every bag, seat and meal can end up costing more than a full-service ticket. Always compare like with like: what baggage is included, can you choose seats, and what happens if you need to change the date?
6. Use open-jaw and multi-city tickets
An open-jaw ticket flies you into one city and home from another, for example into Nairobi and out of Zanzibar, or into Jeddah and home from Madinah. It saves time and often costs the same as, or less than, a simple return.
7. Book connections on a single ticket
Self-transfer itineraries made of separate tickets can look cheap, but if your first flight is late you may lose the second one with no protection. A through-ticket means the airline is responsible for re-booking you if you miss a connection.
8. Travel outside school holidays
UK school holidays push up prices on almost every route. If you can, travel in term time or during the shoulder seasons, such as late April to June or September to November.
9. Watch out for currency and card fees
Booking in pounds with a UK agent avoids currency conversion charges and gives you a clear total price. Ask about any payment surcharges before you pay.
10. Think about premium economy and business deals
Premium cabins are not always out of reach. Airlines regularly run sales on business class, and some routes have unpublished fares that agents can access. If comfort matters on a long flight, it is worth asking for a quote.
11. Do not leave popular dates too late
Last-minute deals do exist, but mainly on routes with spare capacity. For peak dates such as Christmas flights to Nigeria, Ghana or Jamaica, prices almost always rise as departure gets closer.
12. Search one-way and return
On some routes two one-way tickets on different airlines are cheaper than a return. On others, returns are far better value. It is worth checking both.
13. Check baggage rules for each flight
Allowances can differ between the outbound and return journeys or between connecting airlines. Our agents always confirm baggage before ticketing so there are no surprises at the airport.
14. Sign up for fare alerts
Our newsletter shares airline sales and seasonal offers, so you can act quickly when prices drop on your route.
15. Speak to a real person
Online search is the best place to start, but an experienced consultant can combine airlines, find unpublished fares and handle complex itineraries. If you have found a price you like, or your search shows no results, call our team and we will do our best to beat it.
