1PC, 2PC, 23kg, 30kg... baggage rules can be confusing. This guide explains what they mean and how to avoid paying more at the airport.

Baggage is one of the most common sources of confusion and unexpected costs when flying. Different airlines use different systems, and the rules can change between the outbound and return journeys. Here is a clear guide to what you need to know.

Piece concept: 1PC, 2PC

Most long-haul flights to and from the UK use the piece concept. "1PC" means one checked bag and "2PC" means two. Each bag usually has a maximum weight, commonly 23kg in economy and 32kg in premium cabins, as well as a maximum size. You cannot combine allowances, so two bags of 15kg are fine, but one bag of 30kg may not be.

Weight concept: 20kg, 30kg

Some airlines and routes use a total weight allowance instead. With a 30kg allowance, for example, you can usually split the weight between several bags. This system is less common on routes from the UK but still appears on some connections.

Cabin baggage

Most full-service airlines allow one cabin bag plus a small personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag. Weight limits typically range from 7kg to 10kg. Low-cost carriers may only include a small under-seat bag in the cheapest fares.

Connecting flights

When you fly on a single ticket, your bags are normally checked through to your final destination and the allowance of the main carrier applies. If your journey is on separate tickets, you may need to collect and re-check your luggage, and each airline's rules apply separately.

Sports equipment and special items

Golf clubs, skis, bicycles and musical instruments often have their own rules and fees. Always tell us in advance so we can check with the airline before you travel.

How to avoid extra fees

  • Check your allowance before you pack and weigh your bags at home.
  • Pre-book extra bags online rather than paying at the airport.
  • Compare fares with two bags included if you are carrying gifts.
  • Keep valuables, medicines and documents in your cabin bag.

When you book with us, we confirm the baggage allowance for every flight in your itinerary, so you know exactly what to expect.
